Tour de France 2024 – Stage 7 Preview (ITT)

Nuits-Saint-Georges – Gevrey-Chambertin

Start time 13:05. Top 20 starts 16:37:30.

Route

A time trial with the distance of 25.2 km.

The riders go clockwise from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Cambolle-Musigny. From there, it is straight north towards Gevrey-Chambertin with a few twists and turns inside the last 1600m.

And here you have the 3D from Veloviewer. As you can see, there is a little hill between L’Étang-Vergy and Reule-Vergy. It is 1500m at 6.5%.

I would say it is a time trial that is not very technical at all. We barely have a corner until the second intermediate checkpoint. Whenever they are in the cities, the roads get fairly narrow, especially the first corner out of the descent.

Weather

A day with a tailwind for all of the riders, as the wind is blowing from the south. It will be the same wind speed for all the riders and around 22 degrees C.

Contenders

Tadej Pogacar – I think he will do very well tomorrow. He will take time on most of his rivals and he will be contend with it. I’ve seen people debating if he still will be in yellow tomorrow. I think he will, he is a very consistent time trial rider and we are still in the early days of this Grand Tour.

Remco Evenepoel – He starts as the favorite tomorrow as he should do. No Fillippo Ganna or Joshua Tarling means he should be in his own league. This is an effort he should be able to perform, especially after he showed his climbing legs on Galibier. He is getting better day by day.

Jonas Vingegaard – no recon and mostly flat. Vingegaard will likely not get a top-5 tomorrow but he should be able to limit the damage and do a top-10 without to much fuzz.

Juan Ayuso – It is a time trial that should suit him. He is consistent against the clock, I just think it will be difficult for him to get more than a top-10.

Primoz Roglic – he did a wonderful time trial in Dauphiné and prior to that, he won the time trial in Basque Country. He is very confident against the clock and likely will perform better than most expect. I would throw him in as a top-5 candidate.

Carlos Rodriguez – I’d imagine he is one of the losers tomorrow. He has become a better time trialist. He will likely finish 10-15th but he was worth a comment on since he is a big top-5 candidate overall.

Joao Almeida – I’d go for somewhere around top-5. I’d imagine he does very similar to Roglic which is a tad worse than Pogacar.

Wout van Aert – difficult to say really. It is a short interval and a relatively flat stage. I would for certain have thrown him in for a top-3 fight tomorrow, likely in between Evenepoel and Pogacar. I just think he is still some way off his best, meaning he will likely fool around with Almeida and Roglic around 3-6th place.

Stefan Küng – on his best days he could win the stage tomorrow. He just didn’t impress me against the clock in Tour de Suisse.

Who will win?

I will pick Remco Evenepoel.
