Volta Ciclista a Catalunya 2024 – Stage 7 Preview

The Barcelona stage.

Route

They’ve made the stage a little longer than in 2023. They’ve also decided for a different route before the laps.

The breakaway will likely form on the first categorized climb, Col de la Creu de l’Ordal. It isn’t the toughest climb in the world.

Circuit in Barcelona

It makes for brilliant racing. The Montjuic climb is the place where you can make a difference.

The steep section is where we often see the main moves. It is just shy of two minutes this effort, depending – I’d imagine Pogacar can it in 1:40 if he attacks.

Weather

A nice Spring day in Barcelona. Not too windy in the city either.

How will the stage unfold?

The GC is over. Does it mean UAE will let the breakaway have their day? Or is there some old record Pogacar can beat tomorrow? I don’t know.

What I do know is this. It is not solely up to UAE to determine it. I think Bora-Hansgrohe may try a coup in order to get back on the podium with Vlasov. It just seems unlikely, doesn’t it? This stage rarely has big GC gaps, 2023 was a bit different as Evenepoel and Roglic were miles ahead of everyone else.

Contenders

Pogacar – if the chance of winning comes close, he will just take another stage win.

Landa – throughout the week, he has been the second strongest climber. He has the highest chance of following the Slovenian. Please note, the highest chance is not very high. A top-10, with a chance of much more if it becomes selective.

Bernal – after all he has been through, it is crazy to see him attack the descents in this manner. I head the Danish commentators mention that he is not recovering as he used too after a hard stage, which makes him a bit vulnerable tomorrow.

Vlasov – I shouldn’t known today was a bit too much climbing from him. The Barcelona stage is more to his liking. I’d imagine he will go very well.

Leknessund – breakaway hope #1. He climbed well today.

Valter – breakaway hope #2. Recovering from Tirreno-Adriatico.

Kron – breakaway hope #3. Won in Barcelona at La Vuelta 2023.

Williams – breakaway hope #4. He looked very good today.

Laurance – breakaway hope #5. This should suit him.

Thomas de Gendt – breakaway hope #6. He won here in 2021.

Who will win?

I think I will go for the breakaway. It is just a bit funnier than going for Pogacar.

So, I think Stephen Williams will win.
